Book Reviews

Tanganyika Trilogy, by Joyce Baker Porte
(The three books are Where Lions Still Roar, Rogue Lioness, and Pale Lion Rising)

Reviewed by Alice Sweatman

My sister, Joyce Baker Porte, has published a trilogy “The Tanganyika Trilogy” – a 3 book historical novel originating with an old Maasai legend and tracing it’s development and perceived fulfillment from early days beginning in 1905 through post-independence days in Tanzania. Slave trading, German and British settlers and colonial rule, independence with restrictive measures, and missionaries; all make this a fascinating story traced through several families – African, Maasai, Italian, American, German, and Indian. Many experiences of characters in this book are taken from personal and family experiences since my sister and I grew up in Tanzania with our pioneer missionary parents

Marriage to a Difficult Man: The Uncommon Union of Jonathan & Sarah Edwards, by Elisabeth Dodds
Reviewed by Linda Johnson, Librarian

The title may suggest that this is a book for women who find themselves in an unpleasant marriage. NOT SO! This is a book for anyone who is interested in both church and American history.

Jonathan Edwards is known as author of the sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. He was at the forefront of the Great Awakening. Edwards was a philosopher, scholar, preacher, writer, educator, and husband. He was away from home often, however, or closed away studying. He faced some of the same challenges that our pastors face today: church politics, financial needs, scrutiny of his family.
His wife, Sarah Edwards, held together the home, birthing 11 children, cooking, sewing & laundering, gardening, canning, nursing the ill, as well as being hostess to the frequent visitors who stopped by for a meal, an overnight or extended stays.

This book is not a tedious biography of dates and sermon notes, but is chock-full of fascinating facts of the life and times of a great theologian and his spiritual soul mate.
I think you will enjoy it.
